ABOUT THE PROJECT

Overall objectives

The overall objective of the project Support to Legal Metrology in Turkey (EuropeAid/122782/D/SER/TR) is to support Turkey’s private and public sectors in the process of technical harmonization and aligning of their quality infrastructure with that of the EU areas of direct relevance to the Customs Union Decision, more specifically in the parts concerned with technical barriers to trade.

Purpose

The purpose of this project is as follows:

• To facilitate the alignment of the Turkish legislation with the acquis communautaire covering the area of legal metrology;
• To facilitate the restructuring of the General Directorate of Measurement and Standards of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, such that it can meet the conditions necessary for the implementation of the New Approach and the Global Approach;
• To support the further development of the conformity assessment infrastructure relevant to measuring instruments under legal metrology;
• To increase the awareness of the relevant manufacturers, importers and distributors of measuring instruments, (potential) notified bodies, user associations and consumer associations and the National Metrology Institute, about the new strategy of the Ministry relating to legal metrology.

This MEDA project started in August 2006 and will end in July 2007.
